The current Whitworth Art Building, located north of the Cheney Cowles Memorial Library, offers students innumerable possibilities to explore and showcase their talent. The building houses the Koehler Gallery, a permanent collection of fine art, and five separate studio classrooms (painting/drawing, design, printmaking, ceramic, and multipurpose). Students may also develop film in the photography darkroom or work in the digital lab.
In 2008, the Whitworth Art Department is scheduled to move into a new two-story, 20,000-square-foot building that will house six studios and an impressive new gallery space. The $7.1 million facility is designed to allow long-term expansion and will serve Whitworth students for decades to come. It will take advantage of consistent north-facing light for its studios and has an ample yard area off the first floor for ceramics kilns and delivery access to mixed media and sculpture studios. A state-of-the-art design lab will feature Apple computers, and faculty members' offices will be large enough to double as studios for these practicing artists. |
