The Eric Johnston Science Center was constructed with a gift from the Eric Johnston Foundation. A grant from the National Science Foundation, along with private and corporate donations, funded an extensive renovation of the building in 1998-99. All three science departments – biology, chemistry, and physics – are located here, as are classrooms, labs, a library, two greenhouses and a state-of-the-art science auditorium and lecture hall.
Whitworth plans to break ground in 2009 on a new 60,000-square-foot biology/chemistry facility with state of the art laboratories, animal research facilities, and instrumentation. Scheduled to open for fall 2010, the $37 million building would include classrooms convertible to labs that will accommodate the continued growth anticipated for Whitworth's science program over the next 20 years. A second phase will include a 16,000-square-foot addition and complete renovation of Johnston Science Center that will enable co-location and increased integration of the physics and math/computer science departments. This $16 million phase II project is scheduled to be completed in Fall 2011. |
