Whitworth Journalism Student Receives Washington Newspaper Publishers Internship

Whitworth junior James Spung has been selected to receive a Washington Newspaper Publishers Association internship for summer 2008. The internship will provide Spung with paid experience working with host newspaper The Issaquah Press, in Issaquah, Wash. Spung, a journalism and political science double major, will cover city government for the newspaper.

The Washington Newspaper Publishers Association awards 85 internships to students in high school or college. The students must intern at a host newspaper for at least 240 hours and they will receive a $1,500 stipend. Spung was selected after submitting a letter of application, his résumé, writing samples, and two letters of reference.

"I've been told it's important to have experience in the career field you're interested in beyond the education you get in the classroom," Spung says. "I'm hoping my internship this summer will clarify my aspirations and show me the ropes of what is certainly a future career possibility."
