Whitworth Senior Wins Top Award at Phi Beta Lambda National Conference

Whitworth senior marketing and business-management major David Brush recently won first place for leadership in the open-event category at the Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda National Leadership Conference held in Denver, Colo. Joining Brush at the conference were fellow Whitworthians junior economics and math major Duong Ngo and senior music and arts-administration major Jayleen Hille.

Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda is a nonprofit education association of students preparing for careers in business and business-related fields. Each summer, top winners from the spring state-based competitions are eligible to compete at the National Leadership Conference.

"The conference was a valuable experience because it offered an opportunity to challenge my skills and showcase the tremendous education Whitworth offers," Brush says. "I also attended workshops on various subjects relating to being a leader in the business world and finding the right vocation. I applied the lessons and theories from several of my Whitworth classes to the competition and was very well prepared."

The nearly 7,000 delegates to the conference participated in a, four-day meeting for each division that included business-and leadership-training workshops and seminars, corporate tours, the election of national officers, and a competitive events program.

The competition featured individuals, state teams, and local chapters that competed in 40 events representing a wide range of activities and the business and leadership- development focus of FBLA-PBL, as well as open events. The winners of these competitions represent some of the best and brightest of today’s youth, according to the FBLA-PBL website.

"I learned that no matter what your goal in life is, Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda is a valuable asset to have," says Hille. The opportunities presented at PBL conferences for networking, learning, and discovery are phenomenal," she adds. "Every workshop, competition, and meeting is worthwhile to attend, giving the participants experience that will further their educations and opportunities in the business world."

Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) is designed for secondary and college students. Phi Beta Lambda members belong to more than 6,000 chartered chapters, which include students from the United States, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Europe.
