Whitworth University Certification & Career Services

Admission to any residency teacher preparation program requires that you pass the WEST-B (Washington Educator Skills Test-Basic).

For information and to register for the WEST-B, go to www.west.nesinc.com.

To obtain an endorsement in the state of Washington, all applicants must pass the WEST-E test for core/content knowledge for that subject area.

NOTE: *Designated World Language endorsements require passing the WEST-E test and both ACTFL proficiency tests for the specific

  • List your name as it is listed at Whitworth (e.g., if Whitworth lists you as Jonathan, register for the test using Jonathan, not Jon).

What is the WEST-E?

All candidates seeking teacher certification and/or additional endorsements, are required to pass a subject knowledge test for each endorsement area they are seeking. Washington state utilizes the WEST-E tests which are aligned with the state’s endorsement competences.

What about Designated World Languages additional testing?

All candidates seeking Designated World Language endorsements in Spanish and French will need to take the WEST-E Designated Languages test and the ACTFL proficiency tests for the specific language. For information and to register go to: https://www.languagetesting.com/acad_wa1.cfm.

How do I register for the WEST-E?

To Register on-line go to www.west.nesinc.com
There are now two types of tests: Paper-based and Computer-based.

For each paper-based test administration session candidates may register to take:

1, 2, or 3 WEST-B subtests, or

1 or 2 WEST-E tests, or

1 WEST-E test and 1 or 2 subtests, or

Up to 4 subtests (Elementary Education and Middle School Humanities are 2 subtests each),

or a specific combination of WEST-E and WEST-B, refer to the registration site for eligible combinations.

For computer-based tests, there are several days available each month. Registration is a three step process that can take up to a week to complete.

How much time will I have to take my test(s)?

For paper-based testing, test takers reports to the test location at 8:00. You will have until 1:30 to take the tests you are registered for.

For computer-based testing, each test or subtest(s) have a specific time allocation.

What are the test locations for the WEST-E?

For paper-based testing, when registering, select test area 806 for the Spokane area. When you receive your registration confirmation, Pearson will provide the location of where you will need to go. For computer-based testing, before registering, check www.pearsonvue.com/west and choose “Seat Availability” on the right.

How will Whitworth receive my scores?

On the designated Score Report Date for each test date, a list is available to Whitworth with the scores of all test takers who requested that their scores be reported to Whitworth. We do not receive individual score reports. Go to www.west.nesinc.com for test dates and score report dates. To insure that Whitworth receives your scores, use the Whitworth recipient code 253.

Are Study Guides available for the WEST-E?

Study guides are available on the WEST website. Go to "Preparation Materials" on the menu list on the left, and then select "What's On The Test?" Also available on the website are "Test-Taking Strategies."
