| About the Program: Program Highlights |
Unique features of this alternative approach to teacher certification include the following:
- Classes meet one night per week and two Saturdays of each six-week term. This evening and weekend format for coursework accommodates the needs of students who:
- are currently employed during the daytime and have myriad responsibilities that make the accelerated format classes a better fit for their tight schedules (books are even delivered to students the first night of class);
- have a distance to commute to class and prefer to limit weekly trips to campus;
- are currently working as para-educators and wish to combine experience with professional preparation.
- The program is offered in a cohort-based format. A core group of 20 or fewer students will work collaboratively through each of the courses in sequence. This not only models the current educational practice of developing professional learning communities, but also provides a supportive environment for growth and reflection. If most general college requirements and prerequisite coursework are finished, the typical completion time of the education major is two years. This eliminates scheduling conflicts and classes closed due to over-enrollment.
- Adults who work in the schools may complete the field-experience components of the program within their current school building with their administrator’s permission.
- Individuals who hold a valid teaching certificate in the state of Washington and want to add an elementary or secondary endorsement may join a cohort for the necessary coursework.
