His expertise in educational technology and a grant from the Northwest Area Foundation brought him to Whitworth University in 1985 as the Director of Computer Education. Dr. Michaelis has served on the Board of Directors for the Northwest Council for Computer Education (NCCE), and as a member of the executive committee for the Northwest Math Conference.

He has presented at the national conferences of the American Educational Research Association and the American Association for Colleges of Teacher Education, and is a regular presenter at the annual NCCE conference. Dr. Michaelis has served as chair of the Department of Teacher Education since 1997.
