Barbara has been teaching at Whitworth since 1995. She received her Ed.D. in curriculum and instruction from Washington State University in 1998, her MIT from Whitworth in 1992, and her B.S. in crop science from Montana State in 1983. Prior to Whitworth, Barbara taught middle school science and math and worked in agricultural research. In the School of Education she has served as the director of assessment and the secondary coordinator for the MIT and the undergraduate programs. She has taught a variety of courses at Whitworth, including math and science methods, Core 350, and assessment and research methods.
Professionally, Barbara served as a Board of Examiner member for the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). From 2000-02, she chaired the Washington Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (WACTE) Pedagogy Assessment Committee, and she was instrumental in developing the Pedagogy Assessment Instrument that was used for 10 years in all teacher-education programs in Washington state. She was honored for her "Outstanding Leadership" by WACTE in April 2002. Other awards she has received include the 2001 Whitworth University Dean's Award for Junior Faculty Achievement, an honor based on student course evaluations and colleague recommendations, and the 1998 Association of Independent Liberal Arts Colleges of Teacher Education (AILACTE) Scholar Award to study integrating action research into the MIT program.
