About the Program
Thank you for your interest in the Master in Teaching (MIT) Program at Whitworth University, an intensive and comprehensive teacher certification and master's degree program that lasts for 13 or 25 months. The program begins every June. Students are admitted as members of a cohort that provides a "built-in" support group in regard to assignments as well as encouragement through this exciting and demanding program.
During the entire academic year, each MIT student is placed in the public schools with the same mentor teacher. With this year-long placement at one site, MIT students experience the beginning and ending of a year, develop relationships with their students and mentors, come to understand curriculum sequencing, and are able to learn about and implement effective classroom-management strategies over a one-year period with the same students. Finally, this year-long school-site placement is directly connected to what students are learning while taking courses on the Whitworth University campus.
Part-time students will get the same great education, but over a 25-month period. Students will still complete a year-long placement at one site, experiencing a complete academic year that allows them to see how coursework is sequenced over a year in a classroom. The second part of the year long-sequence comprises full-time student-teaching and is the only part of the part-time program that requires full-time attendance. The student-teaching component takes place February-May (spring semester) of the student's second year.
If you have questions about the program or if you would like to observe classes at the university, please feel free to contact Brian Davenport, assistant director of the MIT program, at bdavenport@whitworth.edu, or at 509.777.3769 (Spokane) or 800.929.6894 (toll free).
