Master in Teaching: Alumni Achievements

Here's what some Whitworth graduates are doing with their master in teaching degrees:

  • Sandra LaRoche, '98, helped design a high-school science curriculum and lab facilities for a charter school in Nevada then moved to an inner-city junior high where students in her class won 90 percent of the awards at the school science fair. She is now teaching at Incline High School in Lake Tahoe and pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of Nevada Reno.

  • Loren Ayresman, MIT ¹98, recently received a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Ayresman, who also holds Whitworth undergraduate degrees in business management and mathematics (¹95 and ¹97, respectively), was the honoree for the state of Hawaii, where he teaches math at King Kekaulike High School. The awards were established in 1983 by an act of Congress and are administered for the White House by the National Science Foundation. Awardees were honored at an event in the national¹s capital, where they were introduced to President George Bush.

  • Jim Creasman, MIT '93, an English and creative-writing teacher at North Central High School, in Spokane, was named Teacher of the Month in April by Eastern Washington University, KHQ Television and Sylvan Learning Center.

  • Steve Holland, MIT '90, is superintendent of Orient School District, in Orient, Wash. (north of Colville).

  • Melody Carrothers, MIT '90, was a Christa McAuliffe Award winner while she was teaching at Riverside Middle School, Riverside School District. She currently teaches at Salk Middle School in Spokane.
