Description
EDM 530A Educational Foundations and Critical Issues (1 semester credit) Philosophical foundations of education, critical issues related to education, and the MIT candidate as a compassionate and ethical teacher-scholar.
EDM 531 Exceptional Learners and Mainstreaming Concepts (3 semester credits) Overview of the full continuum of exceptional learners and strategies for meeting their needs in mainstreamed classrooms; instructional strategies for exceptionalities.
EDM 533A Research : Introduction to Educational Research (1 semester credit) Overview of educational research, providing a framework for analysis of current educational research literature, and research designs and types.
EDM 535 Technology in Education (2 semester credits) The goal of this course is to prepare participants to teach with the technology found in today's schools. They will learn how to gain access to information and how to communicate using current technology, including the Internet and multimedia. They will also begin developing technological strategies that will be applied to other education.
EDM 537 Classroom Management (1 semester credit) The purpose of the course is to teach foundational classroom management principles, concepts, and strategies needed in order to manage the physical classroom environment and create a positive learning climate that assures maximum learning and moves K-12 students toward taking more responsibility for their classroom environment.
EDM 540 Math for MIT (3 semester credits) Development of number systems, vocabulary and symbolism, current strategies in arithmetic, algebra and geometry.
EDM 542 (A-C) Concepts in Elementary Social Studies (1-3 semester credits) These courses introduce the content of US history (EDM 542 A), civics (EDM 542 B), and economics (EDM 542 C) that are typically taught at grades 1-8 in the state of Washington. Guiding the content are the Benchmarks set forth for each grade level as stated in WA. State Essential Academic Learning requirements (EALRs).
EDM 545A Elementary Art Methods (1 semester credit) This course places an emphasis on the art experience. The student will become aware of his/her own judgments and bias relating to art. The use of different media, integration of art into other content areas, and process/product will be studied. The student will become familiar with terminology and knowledge in various art programs. The student will learn how to teach art skills and concepts to elementary school children.

EDM 532 Advanced Educational Psychology (2 semester credits) Improvement of learning and teaching effectiveness, including recent developments in human development (cognitive, social, emotional, moral), child growth and development, human learning (behavioral and cognitive) and teaching/instruction.
EDM 533B Research and Assessment (1 semester credit) Provides a basis of understanding of theories and methods of conducting educational research. Development of a Review of Related Literature and Analysis of Assessment Data Plan for the Teacher Work Sample. (TWS)
EDM 536A Introduction to Multicultural/Intercultural Education (2 semester credits) Examination of how attitudes, behaviors and values are shaped; the nature and use of power in society; one's own values; principles of effective multicultural education; cultural influences on learning; and intercultural communication skill training.
EDM 539A Teacher Work Sample (TWS) (1 semester credit) The MIT teacher candidates begin the design of a Teacher Work Sample (TWS) that employs a range of strategies and builds on each student's strengths, needs, and prior experiences. Through this performance assessment, teacher candidates provide the credible evidence of their ability to plan for and facilitate learning by meeting the 9 TWS standards.
EDM 543 Language Literacy in the Elementary School (4 semester credits) This course will examine processes, methods, approaches and materials for teaching reading and language skills.
EDM 544 Elementary Methods, Curriculum Development, Classroom Mgt and Social Studies Methods (5 semester credits) In this course, students will learn how to do the following: (1) understand, apply and demonstrate the learning methods, strategies, assessment tools and needs of the elementary learner, including curriculum integration and unit and lesson planning and (2) investigate and analyze current trends in social studies methods including geography and instruction in the elementary setting.
EDM 545B Elementary Mathematics Methods (1 semester credit) The student will become familiar with various learning theories, teaching strategies and concepts, the remediation of students' math skills, and lesson design. The student learns how to know and apply the mathematical concepts.
EDM 545C Elementary Science Methods (1semester credit) This science methods course involves students in science instruction, focusing on four instructional methods utilized in the elementary classroom: inquiry, integrated, thematic, and problem-based/applied. The goal of this course is two -fold: (1) to provide students with an overview of current methods and (2) to begin a resource collection of grade-level specific science content, activities, assessments, resources and references for use during the teacher-scholar practicum.
EDM 547A Elementary Teacher-Scholar Practicum (2 semester credits) This teaching experience in an elementary school classroom begins when the MIT student reports in late summer and then moves to half-time after MIT classes begin.

EDM 538 Teacher-Scholar Seminar (1 semester credit) On-campus seminars to guide professional development and to prepare for job placement activity.
EDM 539B Teacher Work Sample (TWS) (1 semester credit) The MIT teacher candidate implements the TWS during full-time student teaching. Candidates gather data regarding the extent to which what they planned and taught had a positive impact on student learning. Based on reality, modifications to the initially developed TWS are made.
EDM 545B Elementary Mathematics Methods (1 semester credit) The student will become familiar with various learning theories, teaching strategies and concepts, the remediation of students' math skills, and lesson design. The student learns how to know and apply the mathematical concepts.

EDM 534 Dealing with Abuse and Neglect (1 semester credit) Categories, causes and indicators of child abuse and neglect, teachers' legal responsibilities, appropriate techniques.
EDM 530C Educational Foundations and Critical Issues (1 semester credit) Based on knowledge constructed through study and practice in the MIT program, this capstone course allows for reflection of the teacher-scholar's educational philosophy and vision, and of his or her best pedagogical practice.
EDM 533C Research: Data Analysis (1 semester credit) Analysis of classroom based assessment data to determine impact on student learning based on achievement of Essential Academic Learning Requirement learning targets. Completion of Analysis of Assessment Data for the Teacher Work Sample. (TWS)
EDM 539C Teacher Work Sample: Reflection and self-evaluation (1 semester credit) The MIT teacher candidate edits and completes all 9 components of the TWS. Each candidate shares the contents of their TWS with peers and faculty.
EDM 545D Elementary Music Methods (1 semester credit) Curriculum and methods for teaching music in the elementary school. Procedures and materials for teaching music in the self-contained elementary classroom
EDM 545E Elementary Physical Education and Health Education Methods (1 semester credit) Methods for teaching physical education and health education in the elementary school. Current methods and materials used in developing the elementary curriculum and in teaching the appropriate activities for each grade level.
EDM 547C Elementary Teacher-Scholar Practicum (2 semester credit) Half-time student teaching in the assigned public elementary school classroom from mid-May until the last week; full time during the last week

EDM 551 Teaching and Assessing Content Writing in Secondary Schools ( 1 semester credit)

Using concepts and content set forth in Washington State's Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs), secondary candidates will learn how to integrate writing into the content they teach.
EDM 553 Reading in the Secondary School (2 semester credits) Practical approaches and effective teaching techniques for presenting reading assignments in the content areas will be presented and implemented. The focus of this course is to develop the abilities of teachers to enhance the secondary student's ability to "read to learn" rather than "learn to read."

EDM 555 A-H Secondary Education Methods (1 semester credit each) Specific methods in certification and endorsement area(s). Each course is situated in the public school.
