MIT Professor Invited by Gov. Gregoire to Attend Statewide Summit on Creativity in Public Schools

On October 30, 2007, at the prompting of Governor Gregoire and the Washington Learns Steering Committee, a group of state education leaders will participate in an innovative statewide summit on creativity in public education. O. J. Cotes, from Whitworth’s School of Education, is one of the leaders invited to attend the event, “Creativity Matters: Teaching Creativity/Transforming Education.” More than 150 of the state's most influential business executives, legislators, philanthropists, members of the media and, of course, educators, have received invitations to attend.

The purpose of the summit is to reinforce the premise that creativity matters, to demonstrate that creativity can be taught across all disciplines, and to emphasize that it therefore must be taught. The day-long summit will feature a keynote address by Governor Christine Gregoire, panel discussions by national experts, hands-on workshops with some of the state's most imaginative teachers, and focused discussions on the cross-sector commitments needed to keep creativity at the center of a meaningful education.
