Mentor & Supervisor Resources

Please follow the links below for more information about:

To those who are new mentors for teacher candidates in the Master in Teaching (MIT) program, welcome. Thank you for offering your time, skills, and experience as you provide the vital link in the professional teacher preparation process. To those who have been contributing professional service through mentoring our teacher candidates thank you for your continued willingness and availability to participate in our program. Thank you for partnering with us as we prepare the next generation of professional teachers.

Full time student teaching begins the first week of February, and continues until mid-May. Considering the developmental nature of student teaching, students typically begin full instruction in one prep, adding additional preps as the MIT student, mentor, and supervisor feel the student is ready. MIT students are encouraged to strive to become teacher leaders, and are conscientious, innovative, and student-centered. Upon the completion of their student teaching practicum, MIT students continue observing in their mentor's and other classrooms until the end of the school year. Candidates observe in areas that will expand their understanding of student' development and the total school experience. MIT students experience a complete year in the public school, and this enhances their understanding of the professional expectations of their career choice and provides future classrooms with a highly qualified new teacher candidate.

The commitment to teacher education by schools, administrators, and mentor teachers is greatly appreciated. Mentors receive either monetary compensation or vouchers for Whitworth courses for their support of MIT candidates. Mentor-teachers are integral partners in teacher education efforts at Whitworth, and their participation in the MIT program is highly valued. This relationship with mentors provides feedback to assure that the MIT program provides a curriculum and experiences that are relevant and will produce highly qualified teachers for the classrooms and schools they will serve.
