The Department of Teacher Education faculty believes that teaching is a calling, and that the best teachers are creative, compassionate scholars who are committed to the academic and personal growth of all young people. This perspective is reflected in our conceptual model which integrates five essential domains of knowledge, skills, and dispositions essential for success in the classroom. Whitworth teaching candidates must demonstrate they are scholars in their subject area, guardians of the children and youth whom they teach, involved members of their schools and communities, effective instructors in the classroom, and visionary leaders to their students and schools. The teacher education curriculum at Whitworth combines classroom study of educational theory and best practices with numerous field experiences. Teacher education candidates are immersed in the latest in curriculum, instruction, and assessment by a faculty who has extensive K-12 experience and who are scholars in their respective fields. The department faculty holds the highest expectations for students entering the field of teaching and believes in modeling excellent teaching.
