Department SpotlightWhitworth Alumna Named 2008 Puyallup School District Teacher of the Year
Kimmie Read, a 2002 Whitworth alumna who teaches third and fourth grades at Zeiger Elementary School, in Puyallup, Wash., was named the 2008 Puyallup School District Teacher of the Year. Also selected was Dessie Evans, who teaches seventh-grade social studies at Kalles Junior High School.
Read, who majored in elementary education at Whitworth, learned of her award in April with a surprise announcement during an after-school staff meeting at Zeiger Elementary. Superintendent Tony Apostle, Puyallup School Board President Kathy Afflerbaugh and Vice President Greg Heath, and Executive Director of Communications Karen Hansen shared the exciting news.
Read received a bouquet of flowers from the district and a standing ovation, hugs and handshakes from her colleagues. Read and Evans will be formally recognized May 12 at the Puyallup School Board meeting; both will also be featured in the June issue of Connections.
Read and Evans were selected following a nomination process in which district staff and community members were invited to submit names for consideration. Each year, the district selects one elementary and one junior high or high school teacher to receive the honor.
Their names will be submitted to the Puget Sound Educational Service District to be considered for the regional Teacher of the Year program. Regional winners are expected to be announced in August, and those selected will be considered for the 2009 Washington State Teacher of the Year to be announced in the fall.
