Department SpotlightWriting Buddies Program Provides Interaction with Elementary StudentsOn a sunny day last May, students from St. Pat's Elementary
School from the Hillyard area in Northwest Spokane, gathered in the HUB
to meet their "Writing Buddy," an elementary education student
with whom they had corresponded for much of the Spring Semester. The Buddies
met over snacks and shared with each other their favorite children's book.
The Writing Buddies event was the brainchild of Professor Carol Hollar
as she looked for ways for Whitworth students to have a better understanding
of the writing abilities of elementary aged children. Dr. Randy Wallace,
principal of St. Pat's, saw this as an opportunity for St. Pat students
to interact with college students and to become comfortable with being
