2006 Alum Enjoys Career as Personal Trainer

Derrick Dewindt, a 2006 graduate in health, fitness and physical education, is in his second year as a personal trainer for OZ Fitness in North Spokane. In his two years at Whitworth, Dewindt completed his bachelor's degree while an integral member of the Whitworth track-and- field team. As a team captain his senior year, Dewindt won the conference championship in the hammer and placed 2nd in the discus. He also went on to qualify and compete in the NCAA Division III national meet in the Hammer. Dewindt has acquired several certifications over the past year, which have added to his Whitworth education and enabled him to quickly build a client base.  He will be returning to Whitworth University in a limited capacity as the assistant throws coach for the Pirate track-and-field team. Kinesiology Department Associate Professor Damon Hagerott describes Dewindt as "a great addition to the university's coaching staff as well as to the field of human performance and well-being enhancement."

Hagerott goes on, "As a student, Derrick was engaged and professional in his studies. He is a genuine person with a sincere desire to enhance the well-being of people looking for help with their physical conditioning and wellness needs. 'Like a welcoming sunrise after a dark night' is the best way to describe Derrick's persona: He brings light to those he engages. With the increasing demands of our society's wellness issues, our community is well served by Derrick's integration of caring, knowledge, and skill into his professional practice."
