The Whitworth University women's basketball team topped the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division III Honor Roll by posting a team grade point average of 3.683.
The team's GPA was the nation's best, at the Division III level, ahead of runner-up Central College's (IA) mark of 3.581.
"This achievement tells about the kind of students who choose to attend Whitworth," said head coach Helen Higgs. "They are the kind of complete, well-rounded individuals that every college would love to have."
The WBCA publishes an honor roll for every level of college basketball, from NCAA Division I to NJCAA.
"We are proud of how these women have demonstrated that their athletic endeavors do not have to compromise academic achievement," said Whitworth Director of Athletics, Dr. Scott McQuilkin.
Whitworth was not only successful in the classroom last year, the Pirates had a breakout season on the court. Whitworth finished the season 18-8 overall, including the school's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
"The fact that the faculty really cares about us helps us carry the load," said Pirate guard Erica Ewart, a junior in 1999-2000.
"Because we are a liberal arts college and believe that all aspects of the educational experience are important, the faculty and staff work as a community to ensure the success of our student athletes," she said
