String Ensemble Director Develops Program at Whitworth

Conducting, performing and adjudicating are the equivalent for music faculty of publishing in other academic fields, and String Ensemble Director Roberta Bottelli is highly active in all three areas. Bottelli is a substitute cellist for the Spokane Symphony, performs with the Westminster Chamber Orchestra, and adjudicates the Washington Music Educators Association's solo and ensemble competitions.

Last year Bottelli began establishing a string program at Whitworth. She conducts the new Whitworth String Ensemble, recruits students and coaches the string quartet. She and the Music Department hope to create a full symphonic orchestra - complete with winds, brass and percussion - within the next five years.

"Much of the most important music by composers such as Beethoven, Mozart and Brahms was created for symphony orchestra, in which the majority of the musicians are string players," Bottelli says. "Our goal is to attract more string students to Whitworth and to provide an environment in which they can grow as musicians."
