Department SpotlightWhitworth Music Graduate Selected as Teacher of the Month
Michael C. Jones, a 2000 Whitworth music graduate and band director at Riverside High School, was selected the December 2002 EWU/Q6 Teacher of the Month.
Teachers of the Month, who are featured on Q6 Local News, are nominated by their students and selected by a panel of professors from Eastern Washington University's Department of Education.
Known for his caring attitude and strong commitment to students, Jones was nominated by four of his Riverside High School band students, who noted that Jones often arrives at school at 5 a.m. and doesn't leave until 6 p.m. The award was presented recently at a school ceremony attended by Jones' parents, who flew in from Chicago, and his former advisor at Whitworth, Professor of Music Richard Evans.
"Michael is exactly the kind of alumnus Whitworth would want to have teaching in the public schools," Evans said. "He is a tremendous human being."
Jones, a Richland, Wash. native, graduated from Whitworth in 2000 with a bachelor of arts in Music Education. Before beginning his teaching career, he played trumpet in a band on a cruise ship. He also has performed with the Spokane Jazz Orchestra and the Spokane British Brass Band.
Since joining the faculty at Riverside High School, in Deer Park, Wash., in Fall of 2000, Jones has taught band, jazz ensemble and improvisation classes and led the school’s marching band to a first-place finish in its first competition under his direction. He also teaches general music classes for Riverside Junior High School.
