For the past 30 years, Dan Keberle has been teaching, directing, and performing on the trumpet at the professional and university level. For the past 22 years, he has been the Director of Jazz Studies and Trumpet Professor at Whitworth University, in Spokane, Washington, where he directs the Jazz Big Band 1 and teaches classical and jazz trumpet.
Under Keberle's direction the Whitworth Jazz Ensemble has been honored by being selected to perform at numerous All-Northwest Music Educator and Washington All-State conferences (including those in 2010); the ensemble has also been the first-place band many times in the college/university division at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival (including the 2008 and 2010 festivals). His trumpet students have also been winners of the jazz trumpet solo competition at many Lionel Hampton Jazz Festivals as well as winners in the classical brass division of Spokane's Music Fest Northwest.
Keberle is an experienced performer in both the jazz and classical styles. A clinician for the Bach Trumpet Corporation, he has performed often with the Phoenix and Spokane symphony orchestras, and with other community orchestras, numerous brass quintets, and touring Broadway productions; he has also played at faculty recitals and has given many performances at churches around the United States. He is the leader of the professional jazz quintet Viva Jazz!, and he appears frequently as guest soloist with many public school concert and jazz bands.
In 1995, Keberle was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and spent five months at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, where he directed the jazz big band and taught various courses in jazz studies. He has directed 10 jazz residencies with Whitworth jazz students, in Munich, Rome, Melbourne, Brazil, and Havana, and he was awarded the Whitworth Outstanding Faculty Service Award in 1990-91.
Keberle earned his Doctorate of Musical Arts Degree in trumpet performance from Arizona State University, and his Master's and Bachelors of Music degrees in trumpet performance from Indiana University, all with high distinction.
His hobbies include fishing, water-skiing, gardening, and the Green Bay Packers.
