Mission Statement & Learning Outcomes

The Whitworth Music Department strives to be a community of musicians that recognizes creativity as an essential aspect of being created in God’s image, and a place where individual and community creativity are blended toward a higher purpose. We prepare students for further studies and professional careers in music, as well as for a vocational involvement in music, through the study of the discipline on both a theoretical and practical basis.

The learning outcomes of this major will develop the following:

  • Excellence in technical skills in individual and ensemble performance
  • Excellence in musicianship in individual and ensemble performance
  • Ability to interpret and appreciate a wide variety of musical styles
  • Knowledge of music from a variety of world cultures
  • Ability to integrate music with Christian faith and values
  • Development of strong leadership skills
  • Understanding the role of the musician in service to the community and of the broad career opportunities for a vocation in music

Note to all music majors: Additional information about course require-ments and scheduling is included in the publication Student Guide to a Music Major, which is available from the music department.
