Jan Term 2019: Domain of the Arts Freshman Honors Program in Los Angeles

Freshman students admitted with honors to Whitworth University are invited to apply for an extraordinary Domain of the Arts program in Los Angeles for Jan Term 2019. This is the only off-campus study program available to freshmen and provides a unique opportunity to live, learn and explore in community while studying the arts in the entertainment capital of the world. Popular Assistant Professor of English Bert Emerson will teach the class, Domain of the Arts, which fulfills the fine arts requirement for Whitworth graduation.

There are 18 spots available for students in the Honors Jan Term in Los Angeles program. Completed applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis. Admission decisions will be made on a rolling basis until the program is full. Interested students are encouraged to apply early.

Academic Program


Domain of the Arts

This unique program will immerse participants in historic and contemporary forces that make Los Angeles one of the most significant sites of artistic creation and distribution in the world. Assistant Professor of English Bert Emerson will draw upon his 15 years living in Los Angeles and participating in various ways across a broad spectrum of artistic production and consumption.

Location

Museums
Visit high-art venues like the Huntington, the Norton Simon Museum and the Getty; community-engagement art scenes like LACMA, the Natural History Museum and the Museum of Jurassic Technology; and arts-education venues like the Armory in Pasadena.

Film
Engage with several aspects of Hollywood through such activities as a visit to the American Film Institute, a tour of Warner Bros. Studio, and workshops with members of the film industry.

Theatre
Experience a show at a high-end venue like the Ahmanson Theatre and another at a smaller theatre.

Music
Take a tour or see a show at a venue like the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Literature
Meet with editors from the Los Angeles Review of Books, visit the 22,000-square-foot Last Bookstore and tour 20th-century literary scenes.

Program Cost

Cost of the program is $2,265 per person.

Included:

  • Accommodations at the Fuller Theological Seminary Guest Center in Pasadena, Calif.
  • Local Transportation
  • Theatre/concert tickets
  • Museum entry fees
  • Four group meals

Not included:

  • Transportation to and from Los Angeles
  • Meals (Lodging includes kitchenettes; grocery store and affordable dining are nearby. We recommend budgeting $250-500 for food)

A $500 deposit is due within 30 days of being admitted into the program. A second installment of $1,000 is due on Sept. 1, 2018, and the balance is due by Nov. 1, 2018. All payments can be made online at: www.whitworth.edu/offcampusstudies/depositsandpayments.htm.
