The Whitworth in China Program (WIC) is a 16-week language and cultural immersion program, which includes an academic course option of 14-17 credit hours. The program will be directed by Anthony Clark, Ph.D., assistant professor of Chinese history and faculty of the Asian Studies Program at Whitworth. This program will take place during fall semester at Minzu University (formerly the Central University of Nationalities) in Beijing, China, one of China's elite universities. The program lasts three months and will closely match Whitworth's academic calendar.

Program features include:

Pre- and post-course language evaluation conducted by Anthony Clark.

Intensive Chinese language instruction (equal to one year of on-campus Chinese), 280 in-class contact hours with a Chinese instructor with degrees and certificates in teaching Chinese as a second language.

Seven- to eight-day study tour (led by Anthony Clark, Amanda Clark and a Chinese administrator) includes travel, lodging and most meals.

Students will reside in university dorm rooms (two people per room) at Minzu University.

Application/Selection Process:
This program is offered in fall 2011. Whitworth students will be invited to an informational session in fall 2010, after which the online application will become available. Students will be selected in late fall/early spring based on the application, a written essay, faculty and peer recommendations and an interview. Students selected to participate in the program will be required to attend a pre-departure orientation.

Students will take eight Chinese language credits and six-nine history & political science credits; they will also participate in a seven- to eight-day study program to learn about China's historical sites through lectures on the cultural history of China's "Three Teachings":  Confucianism, Daoism, Buddhism. Visit sites will include Pingyao, Hanging Temple, Jince Temple.
