Dana Today's weather was bright and sunny. The group working on the house in Gulfport, Miss. made a fair amount of progress. They finished shingling on the longest part of the roof and on another section as well. We would have done more but we couldn't get some of the necessary supplies until the next day and we had to wait for some carpentry work to be done. As for the group working in Biloxi, they finished the house. The roof is on and done. Both groups finished early so everyone had time to take showers and relax in the sun this afternoon. After a delicious dinner of cheeseburgers provided by the Whitworth alumni, we heard a presentation from FEMA and a volunteer group called Hands On USA. It was good to hear from both groups about how they were helping the people hit by the hurricane. During the question and answer session, things got a little heated between the volunteers and FEMA. Much of what we've heard from the people about FEMA is negative. One of the issues was that there are people in need of FEMA trailers to live in but still don't have them, even five months after Katrina. My impression of FEMA is that it is a bureaucracy that just didn't seem to care. Despite the quarrel, the general message we got is that volunteer help is still very much needed. After a little afternoon rest, we are ready to work the last two days this week before heading off to Jackson.
