Krystle
Lorin and I worked in the "check-in" booth for most of the day at Katrina's Kitchen in Pass Christian, Miss. We had to check ID, make sure the people were from an affected city, and sign new people in. It was so hard to turn people away – but we had to. There were a couple of people that didn't have ID – or had been there only a few days ago – so we had to tell them to come back later – it was heartbreaking. We did break the rule a couple of times – how could we not? There was one older lady who came and said, I know I'm supposed to have an ID, but I was in a car accident last week, and the hospital still has it. I've been here before, could you let me in? We had to let her in. And there were so many kids! When I think about the disaster, I usually don't think about all of the kids and how it has been terrible for them. But there they were, having to act as adults in some cases, helping their parents shop for food and helping make sure their needs were met. I can't even imagine having children go through all of this. Every time I see another child affected by the hurricane, it breaks my heart all over again.
