Gulf Coast Study Program Travelogue: Sunday, Jan. 15, 2006

Kyle N.
Today we attended church at the Voice of Calvary Fellowship. This was my first real encounter with a multiracial church in the United States, and it was definitely a reflection of balance. Granted, my expectations towards the characteristics of a black church stemmed from stereotypes and biases gleaned mostly from the Blues Brothers movie. Obviously, this is not the most reliable or useful of sources. Still, I found the worship and preaching to be just as heartfelt and accessible as that in another church with equitable/comparable movement of the Holy Spirit.

Afterwards we had a few members of the church talk to us about the moral and cultural state of decay that existed in New Orleans prior to Katrina. A lot of the emphasis was placed on the education system and problems it was/is facing. The enormity and monstrosity of this issue is quite despairing. I kind of feel that being exposed to so many problems that we face today has the potential to burn me out before I actually do anything.
