India Study Program Travelogue: January 2006

“The goal of this class is to explore facets of computer science from the viewpoint of another culture.  Technology in the culture will be viewed from several aspects:

  1. Computer science research and development in institutions of other countries
  2. Role technology plays in the other culture’s society
  3. Impact of the culture on that society’s practices of computer science and technology
  4. Study of India’s contribution in this area to the global economy
  5. Comparisons with the role of computer science and technology in the U.S.
  6. Computer science in academia and industry of the other society
  7. The increasingly global nature of computing – joint project development and subcontracting, ethic and moral issues of global concern

This course will build upon an existing foundation of collegiality that exists between practitioners of the computing profession. The course will include the common scientific and technical interests of CS/Math students; an experience of another culture through a learned awareness of technical advances in the other culture, and, the influences of that culture on their technical advances.  This course will give students a greater awareness and appreciation for advances and technology practices in other cultures.

The course also involves a number of rich cultural experiences.  Touring and interactions with people will provide a rich cultural experience of the society in both southern and northern India.  Additionally, students will visit temples, churches, and other important historical landmarks such as the Taj Mahal and the Red Fort. Students will visit museums, forts, ancient Indian ruins, temples, and churches (both in southern and northern India).  The group will join with churches for fellowship, worship and an appreciation of the nature of Christianity in India.”
