Today started out like the previous days with a quick breakfast at the hotel. After making sure we had all our belongings we left the Lake Land Resort for the last time.
Our first stop of the day was Mother Teresa’s house. Here we were able to see where Mother Teresa worked as well as some of the effects of her work in India. It was amazing to see a few of the letters that she received and wrote that showed her great impact on India.
Just a few blocks away was the Nataji museum which was our next stop. Nataji was an influential politician who advocated strongly for an independent India. The only way Nataji thought India could achieve independence was through taking up arms against Britain. To achieve this Nataji made a dangerous journey to Germany and then to Japan in the hope of creating an alliance. Although Nataji is famous for his role in the fight for independence he is also famous for his “death.” The records show that Nataji died in a plane crash, however, his body has never been found and people believe that he faked his death and went into hiding.
After the tour of the museum we walked across the street to a very nice, western mall. Inside the mall we found many stores that we would find back in the States such as Nike and Baskin Robbins. While it was nice to see something that reminded us of home it was strange to see this nice mall with security guards at every door in the middle of the city where the poverty is overwhelming.
Shortly after lunch we made our way to the train station for our overnight ride to Delhi. Getting on the train was a little difficult due to the fact that many of us had never traveled on an overnight train and we were not to sure what to do. After a busy week in Kolkata many of us were tired and decided to go to bed early to the sometimes gentle rocking of the train.
