"Ostia Antica made me realize how truly brief American history (as we know it) is. The fact that the stones I was stepping on were so much more ancient than any man-made thing in an American city gave me some perspective. But yet, despite the enormous span of time between ancient Rome and my home, as I walked through the living spaces I felt an echo of lives lived. I could almost hear the footsteps and smell the baking bread. These were still people who created beauty, loved life and in the end, passed on."
