Jan. 10, 2008
Today was a day of relaxation and rejuvination. We stayed at a retreat center, which is a place of reconciliation for those still struggling with apartheid. It is a beautiful place to be -- waterfalls, hiking, and lots of places to sit, think, and write in our journals. We began our day with a time of worship and communion led by theologian John De Gruchy, followed by an incredible discussion (and tea!). John spoke to us about reconciliation and what it means to forgive -- particularly as many are struggling in their search for grace for apartheid persecutors. We also spent time discussing the post-apartheid generation and looked at the issues the church is now facing. It was a an incredible conversation. Afterwards, we spent time at the beach in Hermanus and had a chance to swim in the freezing Indian Ocean. The air was warm, though, and made it a perfect way to end our time at Volmoed before we headed to Oudtshoorn.
