David O'Neil Although referred to as a developing nation, the Thai economy is quite impressive. As you scan the city's horizon, it is decorated with stunning skyscrapers reaching high into the clouds. The air is filled with happiness and a sense of vision for this innovative country. Bangkok is not only the capital of Thailand , but also the center of the country, providing the residence for three fourths of the country's people. Today we visited the U.S. Embassy and with the President of the American Chamber of Commerce, which happens to be the largest in the world. All of our speakers were very impressive and encouraging. The president of the Chamber is also a high-ranking executive for Nike here in Thailand. At the conclusion of these visits, it was quite apparent why this tiny Asian country is one on the move. Thailand is a labor intensive country offering many opportunities for businesses from all over the globe. Many companies call Thailand home because of its wonderful people, hard work ethic and conviction to becoming a more global player in today's marketplace. Despite all of this, there are still many who live in poverty within this country. It is not uncommon to find a 25-story high-rise planted right next to a row of crumbling housing structures made of various metals. It is for this reason that the Thai government has taken new initiatives to raise its people out of poverty. One solution is encouraging more direct investment in terms of local Thai business as well as foreign business as well. Another solution is a more grassroots approach to the problem. In Thailand there is a great deal of entrepreneurial spirit, however it is limited by the amount of resources available to the people. In response the Thai government has developed a micro-enterprise solution, primarily in the form of micro-lending. The goal is to put more money into the hands of the poor entrepreneurs who can turn that money into prospering small businesses that employ more of the Thai poor. Thailand is a country rich in spirit and one we should all have our eyes on.
