Many refer to Thailand as being 'The land of smiles.' These smiles are
limited though, to those who have power, wealth and/or luck. Today our
trip began with a visit to the Grand Palace. Built there were some of
the most ornate and beautiful structures I have ever seen. We then traveled
by boat to an upper-class mall filled with various antiques and clothing.
After visiting the mall, a gradual change took place where we went from
beauty to reality. We walked through the night market bartering for inexpensive
treasures while those less fortunate made money selling their skin to
travelers. Women were everywhere either escorting men, dancing half-naked
on stages or providing sexual duties for anyone who would take their bait.
This day is ending with sadness and disgust. Prostitution has a stronghold
on many of the Thai people. It consumes their lives, leading them to hopeless
darkness. At least there are positive alternatives being made available
to these women, but in the meantime the existence of prostitution is rampant.
I felt sadness for these women and at one point wanted to attempt saving
them, but could not. I hope and pray for justice and humility.
