Physicists work in a wide range of areas, from the astronomical to the atomic, from quasars to quarks, in a continuing search for a more complete understanding of the physical universe and for new and improved applications of this understanding. This work is carried out in universities and in industrial and government laboratories. Individuals with backgrounds in physics also work in science writing, business, law, medicine and high-tech positions and teach at the high-school and college levels. Potential employers include the National Institute of Standards and Technology, NASA, the National Weather Service, utilities and energy agencies, engineering firms, aerospace industries, computer-hardware and -software developers, medical labs and scientific laboratories.
