Personal Page: Richard Schatz
Dr. Richard Schatz is a professor of economics, specializing in courses in international trade, international finance and economic development of the Third World. Dr. Schatz joined the Whitworth faculty in 1989 after a career of over 20 years, most of it spent working and living in South and Southeast Asia. Dr. Schatz holds master of arts and doctorate degrees in economics from the University of Hawaii where he was an East-West Center Scholar. He completed his graduate work after spending three years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Sarawak, Malaysia. Following graduate studies, he was a Rockefeller Foundation Visiting Lecturer at Thammasaat University in Bangkok, Thailand, then a Senior Project Economist at the Asian Development Bank in the Philippines. In 1979, Dr. Schatz left the Bank to join a Hawaii-based consulting and investing firm, specializing in private and public sector agriculture sector development in South and Southeast Asia. During that time he worked in the Philippines, Indonesia, Burma, Pakistan, Bangladesh and a number of other developing Asian and Pacific Island countries. Since joining Whitworth, Dr. Schatz has continued his consulting work in development economics, including assignments in Pakistan, Thailand, Bangladesh and the Philippines in 1995 and 1996. In addition to his continuing interest in third would development, Dr. Schatz consults for area firms, frequently testifying in legal suits as an expert witness on economic evaluation of losses. At Whitworth, Dr. Schatz is a Faculty Athletic Representative for the college, representing Whitworth at athletic conference and National Athletic Association (NCAA) meetings and advising the President on matters related to intercollegiate athletics. Dr. Schatz has five children and lives on a small farm in the mountains 35 miles north of Whitworth where he raises horses. He enjoys fishing, jogging and basketball.
