Whitworth Grads Pursuing Doctorates in Economics

Five recent Whitworth grads are now enrolled in doctoral programs in economics in universities from one end of America to the other. Four of these students were economics majors at Whitworth and one is a master of international management grad. Of the five, three are international students and two are Americans. And four of the five are women. All five of these students received fellowships or teaching assistantships to pay their grad- school expenses.

These alums are studying in universities from Hawaii to Virginia.

  • Geri Flinn, '02, Spokane, is studying at the University of Hawaii, where she recently married a young man from Honolulu. Flinn made her way to Hawaii from Whitworth via a year in grad school at the University of Montana in Missoula.

  • Nino Sitchinava, '02, an econ major and also a member of the Class of '03, is originally from Georgia (the country, not the state). She is a teaching assistant and full-time grad student in her second year in the department of economics at the University of Oregon.

  • Nina Sidneva, '02, who graduated with Sitchinava as an undergrad major in economics, is a teaching assistant and Ph.D. student at the University of Washington department of economics. Nina, who is from Lithuania, is also in her second year of grad school.

  • Josh Hill, an '99 economics grad, is now enrolled in a doctoral program in economics at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. Josh is the recipient of a prestigious four-year full fellowship from George Mason to support his studies in development economics. After graduating from Whitworth, Josh spent two years in the West African country of Togo prior to his return to the US to do graduate study.

Rich Schatz, chair of Whitworth's department of economics and business, reports that this is the largest number of Whitworth grads ever to be in grad school in economics at one time. Rich also mentioned that he has four other current or recently graduated students who are in the process of applying to grad schools in economics for enrollment in fall 2005.
