Organizational What?
By Kristine N. Ruggles
Organizational Management, '03
I can't tell you how many times I had to explain myself when I was enthusiastically sharing my re-entry into the world of academics via the organizational management degree-completion program at Whitworth. Nearly two years later, with my OM degree in hand, I hold a management position as volunteer coordinator for the Inland Northwest Chapter of the American Red Cross -- a position in which I have jurisdiction over nine counties and that seemed only a pipe dream five years ago.
The Red Cross is a volunteer led, nonprofit organization operating on a donor-based budget with minimal paid staff positions. Teamwork and quality of service delivery are vital in everyday operations. OM taught me how to be a team player, beginning with Group Dynamics and building with each group project assigned throughout the curriculum. Our leadership philosophy is servant-based, and OM not only taught me that concept but emphasized its rewards in promoting collaborative business cultures.
In addition to these broad concepts, the Whitworth Organizational Management Program made sure I was equipped with the practical skills necessary in today’s environment. I can develop a concept, prepare a presentation, and speak in front of an audience with confidence. I understand the underpinnings of the financial status of our organization and can communicate on many levels. Most important, I gained a sense of urgency in using these newfound skills and competencies to contribute not only to my profession but also to our community at large -- a perfect fit at the Red Cross. Thank you, Whitworth Continuing Studies!
