Organization
Whitworth's
School of Global Commerce and Management will become a regional
leader of entrepreneurship education, strengthening connections between
the university and the Spokane business community with a recent award from
the Seattle-based Herbert B. Jones Foundation. The three-year grant program
lays the groundwork for the development of the Program for Entrepreneurship
and Small Business Studies by establishing a job shadowing/mentoring/internship
program that links students with Spokane-area entrepreneurs. Grant funding
also supports an on-campus speaker series to provide Whitworth students
and faculty, and members of the regional business community, opportunities
to learn from and interact with entrepreneurs and small-business professionals
from industries throughout the region.
Development
Development of the Program for Entrepreneurship and Small Business
Studies includes designing new curricula for the creation of a major and
minor in entrepreneurship and small-business studies; providing a venue
for Whitworth students and faculty to collaborate with entrepreneurs in
the Inland Northwest; and developing programs including business education,
certificate in entrepreneurship and small business, and regional research
and consulting services, to meet the needs of the business community.
Our Goal
We seek to balance classroom instruction with experiential learning. This
involves real life experiences in the business world, not just book knowledge.
Rubbing shoulders with leaders in the marketplace will enhance students'
competence, self-confidence, and character, as well as their ability to
think independently and to accept risk.
