Dale Bruner, (1975-1997) professor emeritus of theology
Greetings from the Bruners in Pasadena, California! Thank you for your fidelity to the gospel! I walk an hour (four miles) every weekday morning to the gracious Fuller Seminary McAlister Library (with the new Hubbard Library going up next door) to study about and write commentary on The Gospel According to John. Halfway there each morning I walk across the beautiful Cal Tech campus and look into the research windows I pass, with their test tubes and paraphernalia, and say to these dear scientists in my heart, "You may discover the cure to cancer; and I know you are studying very important subjects. But I get to study, all day long, the main reality ever to hit the planet: God's personal visit in Jesus of Nazareth and all that this means for complete renewal of the human race. God bless us all!" On Sundays I have the privilege of teaching "The Good News Class" at our home congregation, First Presbyterian Church, Hollywood. We are in the midst of the hardest book I have ever studied in my life: The Book of Revelation! Help! Dr. Robert Mounce, former president of Whitworth and esteemed commentator on Revelation, told me that Luther said the only thing he knew for sure about the Book of Revelation was that the Holy Spirit did not inspire it. Calvin wrote a commentary on every book in the NT except Revelation. I understand. We have made it through the first seven chapters. But next week I'm to teach chapter 8; I think I'll skip chapters 8, 9, and 10 (look at them!) and do chapter 11 next Sunday. Do you agree? Our younger son, Michael, has just been accepted for doctoral work at Fuller (on something like "The Gospels according to Jefferson, Dickens, and Tolstoy: A Critical Study" ), while he continues to teach at Azusa Pacific University. (He was voted best teacher by the students a year ago; we are so proud of him! He substitute-teaches for me at church when I have to be away.) Fred and his wife, Signe Schilperoort (Whitworth grads!), hope to return to the Philippines next year after their final tour of duty with the State Department in Washington, D.C. Kathy edits everything I write in John and walks with me most weekday afternoons in the park. Have finished chapters 3-12 in John. Now on to chapters 2, 1B, 13-21, and 1A (the prologue): Paradise! Warm regards to you all. Dale with Kathy Bruner
