Academic Initiatives - Departmental Initiatives
  • English
A new internship opportunity for upperclassmen is being developed in the English Department. The internship allows the selected student to work with a prestigious organization outside of the Spokane area in an environment he/she is considering for a vocation. Contact Dr. Doug Sugano for more information.

  • Mathematics
In order to prepare students for life after graduation, the Mathematics Department is equipping its students with tools and resources which will help them in graduate education and career path. The department is sponsoring seminars, conference and colloquium travel, faith and mathematics discussions, and the creation of a website for mathematics majors.

In October 2002, Dr. Sandra Cooper, Professor of Mathematics spoke on the topic of "Women in Mathematics, Science and Engineering". She discussed the issue of underrepresentation of women in mathematics, science and engineering and suggested improvements for this situation.

For more information, contact Dr. Lyle Cochran.

  • Philosophy
Many people ask, "What can I do with a Philosophy degree?" The Department of Philosophy will answer this question by developing several new aspects of its program, including evaluation of the current major, creation of literature on the vocational aspects of a Philosophy degree, and travel to other institutions with vocationally focused programs. Contact Dr. Forrest Baird for more information.

  • Student Life
Programs in campus residence halls will address vocational questions in large and small groups with interactive discussions, panel, and exercises, and will try to help lead Whitworthians down the path to discovering their own meaning behind their vocation and their faith. Contact Brad McKerihan or Kathy Storm for more details.

  • Women's Studies
The Women's Studies Program will develop its curriculum through creation of new courses and study abroad opportunities, redesign of current courses, and expansion of the current Women's Studies leadership base. For more information, contact Dr. Pamela Parker.
