Chemical Hygiene Officer

A chemical-hygiene officer can help you determine hazards. A CHO is familiar with the regulations that relate to the handling and disposal of hazardous materials. The role of a CHO is to provide technical guidance in the development and implementation of the provisions of the Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP).

This can encompass the following:

  • hazard assessment of experiments;
  • recommendation of personal protective equipment;
  • recommendation of engineering and process controls;
  • monitoring the procurement, use and disposal of chemicals;
  • providing industrial hygiene/environmental monitoring when necessary;
  • explaining process control and handling requirements for regulated substances. Providing handling guidance and ultimate disposal of hazardous wastes generated. Periodic inspection of laboratory facilities to ensure compliance with provisions of CHP;
  • researching regulatory and legal requirements associated with use of hazardous materials;
  • working with administrators and employees to develop and implement appropriate chemical hygiene policies and practices through the Science Safety Committee.

Please feel free to ask Whitworth's chemical hygiene officer any safety/hazardous waste related questions.
