Walt Oliver's Message to the Whitworth Community
Sept. 14, 2009
Dear Whitworth community,
It is with deep appreciation for Bill Robinson's extraordinary leadership and service to Whitworth University that the board of trustees receives Bill's announcement that he plans to step down as president at the end of the 2009-2010 academic year.
During his 17-year tenure, Bill has championed Whitworth's distinctive mission to provide an education of mind and heart characterized by both Christian commitment and open intellectual inquiry. This year's record freshman class demonstrates that Whitworth's mission is in great demand and that the university's enrollment and financial position are strong. That strength gives us tremendous confidence as we look forward to the next chapter in Whitworth's history.
We plan to conduct the same vigorous search process that brought Bill to Whitworth and that will identify an individual who can build on the excellent work that has been accomplished during Bill's tenure. Two members of the board have agreed to serve as co-chairs of the presidential search committee. Other members of the search committee – including faculty, staff and student representatives – will be identified in the days to come.
The board is grateful that Bill has agreed to remain in his role until Whitworth's next president is in place and that he will serve part time as president emeritus for one additional year to support the new president with Institutional Advancement initiatives. We also are thankful for the excellent leadership team, faculty and staff at Whitworth that will ensure the university continues on its positive trajectory through the transition process.
We look forward to opportunities in the future to celebrate everything that Bill and Bonnie have meant to the Whitworth community and to thank them for their wonderful service. And we ask for God's blessing on the Robinson family and on the Whitworth community at this important and exciting time.
