Homecoming Week 2005 began with a celebration at Friday night's third annual George F. Whitworth banquet, during which this year's Whitworth Alumni Award winners (left and facing page) and key donors were honored.
Highlights of the week included the dedication of the Hello Walk and the new Scotford Tennis Center and Cutter Courts. The Hello Walk, a pedestrian corridor that features double sidewalks, decorative lamps with hanging flower baskets, and new trees, runs along The Loop, connecting the Hixson Union Building to the aquatics center and the fieldhouse. The corridor is named in honor of a similar path that once existed between McMillan and Ballard halls. The goal of the original Hello Walk tradition was to create a friendlier atmosphere on campus and to spark friendships among students.
"We hope this new Hello Walk will encourage and nurture Whitworth's continuing commitment to friendliness and strong community," says Kristi Burns, vice president for institutional advancement at Whitworth.
Also during Homecoming Week, Whitworth unveiled the new Scotford Tennis Center and the Cutter Courts. This complex of six courts, located northeast of the aquatics center, is a significant addition to the college's athletics facilities. The tennis center is named for alumnus John Scotford, '51, his wife, Judy, and other members of the Scotford family who have contributed significantly to the college. The courts' namesake is Ross Cutter, former athletics professor and tennis coach, who retired in 1991 after 33 years at the college. After thanking Cutter for his contributions (and "discoursing at the operational level" – a Cutter catchphrase), Athletics Director Scott McQuilkin, '84, offered these remarks: "As the stewards and beneficiaries of this facility, we look forward to sharing the story of the Scotford family's generosity with current and future Whitworth tennis players. This family has done so much to benefit the campus, and I look forward to getting to say the name ‘Scotford' whenever I refer to this great new tennis facility."
