The recipient of this year's Recent Alumnus Award is Kyle Orwig, who received his bachelor's degree from Whitworth in biology and chemistry, then went on to earn his doctorate in biochemistry and animal sciences at Oregon State University. He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Kansas. A nationally known expert in stem-cell research, Orwig has remained connected to Whitworth by making himself available to mentor students interested in graduate school and careers in science.
Orwig visited campus in September to present a lecture based on aspects of his work at the Pittsburgh Development Center, a research hub at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He has established an active lab at PDC that focuses on understanding the biological activity and functional genetic characteristics of adult male germline stem cells. His research has attracted significant funding from the National Institutes of Health and has been published in leading scientific journals. (He is also a contributor to this issue of Whitworth Today. See his article, "What's really at stake in stem-cell research?") Orwig is married to Valerie (Nord, '90) Orwig; they have three children.
