PBS viewers across the nation will soon have the opportunity to learn about the Japanese American experience in the Northwest during WWII – and about Whitworth College. In Time of War, a 54-minute film written, directed and co-produced by Andrea Palpant Dilley, '00, has been picked up by 92 PBS stations for airing this spring and summer. This broadcast includes many of the largest markets in the country: New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Atlanta, San Francisco, Houston and Los Angeles.
"New York City's PBS affiliate, WNET, has decided to feature the documentary in its program guide," says Palpant Dilley, "which will garner a large number of viewers. So we're very excited about the extent of the national coverage."
In Time of War was produced by David Tanner and Palpant Dilley, of Spokane's North by Northwest Productions, in cooperation with Whitworth and with Professors Dale Soden and Doug Sugano. The program features interviews with Japanese Americans in the Pacific Northwest – including several Whitworth alumni – who were affected by evacuation, internment, resistance and military service during WWII.
"One of the strongest features of this documentary is the way in which the subjects talk about what it meant for them to be Americans and how they reacted to their experience during the war," says Palpant Dilley. "The themes regarding individual freedom and civil liberties are just as pertinent today as they were during WWII. We want the program to be a catalyst for the viewer to start thinking about these complex issues."
