Adaptations of Antigone, Whitworth Theatre's fall production, have often been presented during times of national conflict. The Bertolt Brecht World War II-era adaptation of Sophocles' original play, produced on Whitworth's main stage in October, brings to the forefront the human need to reconcile personal beliefs with the needs of society. Director and theatre faculty member Brooke Kiener, '99, says of the Whitworth production, "Time and location are blurred so that the intersection of the personal and the political is not relegated to one specific group of people in one specific place. Rather, our environment is a war-torn, symbolic space that both supports and transcends the themes of the play." At right, senior Lisa Gilham portrays the anguished protagonist.
