Learning to Make a Difference

Iveth Canales, a junior majoring in international business, is a long way from home. Canales traveled from Las Uvas, Honduras, in order to study at Whitworth. She heard about Whitworth from alumna Sheila Maak, '97, who volunteered with the Peace Corps in Las Uvas. Canales was in high school, participating in the Junior Achievement Honduras program, when Maak was the program’s director. Through Maak, Canales learned of Whitworth and decided to apply to the university.

"I wanted a better education, and opportunities opened up to come here," says Canales. "It has been wonderful, and I love this school."

Canales plans to go back to Honduras and work to provide micro-loans and other financial services to the poor. She hopes to attend graduate school and to start her own business helping people in rural Latin America.
