Award-winning poet Tony Hoagland was Whitworth's Simpson-Duvall Lecturer this spring. Hoagland, whose poems address such themes as national identity, selfhood, and the realities of humanity, has published numerous poetic works and has received awards including the James Laughlin Award of the Academy of American Poets and the 2005 Mark Twain Award, given in recognition of a writer's contribution to humor in American poetry. Hoagland teaches in the poetry program at the University of Houston. His collection What Narcissism Means to Me (2003) was a finalist for the National Book Critics' Circle Award.
