Whitworth Prepares for, Responds to Flu Season

Whitworth anticipated and prepared for seasonal flu and potential H1N1 flu outbreaks by engaging in summer meetings and coordinating response plans with the Spokane Regional Health District, the County Department of Emergency Management, and other educational institutions in the Spokane region. These groups have continued to meet, to jointly monitor and coordinate information and response to the flu season. Since the start of fall semester, the Whitworth Health Center has treated about 100 students with flu-like illness.

The health center is strongly encouraging students to be vaccinated for both seasonal influenza and H1N1 influenza. The health center has dispensed 300 seasonal influenza vaccinations and is authorized by the Washington State Department of Health to be an H1N1 vaccine provider. Whitworth received the H1N1 vaccine in early November and is administering it to those who wish to receive it and who meet the CDC guidelines for vaccination.
