What is an internship?
- It is a supervised work experience with intentional learning goals
in an organization that corresponds to a student's academic major.
- The student earns credit in his or her major for successfully completing
an internship.
- All students are encouraged to prepare for meaningful employment
through internship training in the professional community.
Why is an internship important?
- It gives a student a competitive edge in obtaining an employment
position, especially in a limited job market
- It assists students in developing a network for future employment.
- It allows students to decide whether their career goals match the workplace
environment.
- It integrates academic knowledge with actual job experience.
- It enhances a résumé.
How to learn more about internships
Are there opportunities to do an internship outside of the United States?
- Yes. Students wishing to participate in an international internship must meet with a representative of the Whitworth Off-Campus Studies Office for direction and to complete the required paperwork. Students cannot gain credit for work done in a country under a travel warning. Click here to check travel warnings. Students will be denied credit if they fail to meet with a Whitworth Off-Campus Studies Office representative before leaving on their internship experience.
How to register for an internship
- Attend the required internship orientation in the Whitworth Career Services
Office.
- Complete the contract
form (explained in the orientation), obtain the necessary signatures, and submit the completed form to Whitworth Career Services.
